Much to the chagrin of our MS rep we are not even entertaining thoughts of Hyper-V here. We recently entered into an ELA with VMWare and that essentially kicks MS out the door for virtualization.
Having been involved with ESX for awhile and following MS somewhat as we do run MS software here I can honestly say that I don't see Microsoft catching VMware. There is a lot of hype over what Hyper-V will do in the future against what VMware does now but the realization has to be that by the time MS gets around to implementing it VMware (or someone else) will have long gone past that point.
The virtualization software front is evolving far too rapidly for Microsoft and they've shown repeatedly in the past that they are unable to keep up with that speed. Microsoft has long since moved on from the innovative company they once were to a sustaining company. They have their niche (business infrastructure applications) but when you get to the datacenter they simply fail to keep up. I can't help but be UNIMPRESSED with their latest round of "Live Services" as compared to what Google is offering. Windows Mobile has long had a chance to be a dominant platform but as is typical of Microsoft they simply develop software and expect hardware manufacturers to make the best of it. Now they are struggling against Blackberry and Apple (both hardware companies with competent and desired software backing it).
Very few companies in the world can evolve to the size Microsoft has and continue to be on the leading edge of technology. Will Microsoft be able to catch VMware? I think their focus will not be in desktop virtualization but in pushing cloud services and terminal services.. err Remote Desktop Services. Will it work? Perhaps in a lot of situations it will, but will it work better than competing technologies? I doubt it. For years people relied on Citrix to provide the final functionality to Terminal Services, Microsoft always leaves room for its partners to complete its technology.
I didn't want to rant on Microsoft, I believe they are great at what they do and that in many cases they get a bad rap because they are large and an easy target. However I have not seen an INNOVATIVE product from Microsoft in many many years and I don't expect miracles in the near future.
