Is virtualization a “red alert” for the government?

Posted by Doug Lane on July 30th, 2008 in Virtualization

Government Technology raises the question of whether or not virtualization is a technology the government should be using. Are there too many security risks with virtualization? Do the benefits make virtualization worth it?

The answers are “no” and “yes” respectively. The article notes some of virtualization’s major benefits (save time, save money, you’ve heard it all before) and goes into some nice detail on security steps a government agency should take (shut down unnecessary services in the virtual machine, monitor what’s going on in your virtual machines, keep virtual machines isolated).

Virtualization, on a whole, is a pretty secure technology. It’s not a red alert, it’s not even an orange alert.

ZoneAlarm ForceField is based on virtualization technology. It copies all the files on your computer that the Internet can write to, and puts them in a virtual space, a sandbox, on your hard drive.
